Mira Crossing the Square-

English 原文
Mira balanced a slim bicycle wheel against her hip, its new axle wrapped in paper inside her satchel. The clock over the tram stop clicked toward noon, and she aimed for the workshop on the far side of Riverstone Square before the next bell. A temporary stage blocked the direct path, so she guided her bike along a curved scaffolding corridor. A pale guideline, little more than a taut string, stretched between orange cones to steer foot traffic; a sudden tug of wind lifted it against her spokes, and she paused to free the line before moving again.
Near the fountain, street performers released colored powder into the spray. Bright clouds drifted over shoppers, and a burst of applause scattered the crowd sideways. A folded leaflet slid across the wet stones, caught under Mira’s front tire, and jammed against the brake. She stepped down, shook the wheel, yet the damp square refused to surrender the paper. While kneeling, she spotted the true problem: the leaflet’s corner wedged between rim and pad. Pulling it free revealed a smudge of teal ink on the rubber, but the brake released, and the bicycle rolled once more.
The detour routed her behind a chemistry booth where a student demonstration bubbled. A tiny glass reactor clicked as beads inside danced. "That pellet acts as the catalyst," the demonstrator explained to onlookers, tapping the vessel. The remark faded into the general chatter, yet the word held Mira’s focus; the same principle powered the miniature steam engine waiting at the workshop. She pictured gears spinning within a brass framework no larger than a breadbox, all relying on the axle in her bag. Her boot slipped on stray powder, forcing her hand onto the booth’s table. Flasks clinked, but nothing toppled, and she regained balance, cheeks warmed by the narrow escape.
At the workshop door, she lifted the wheel onto a bench cluttered with cogs. Rowan, the machinist, glanced up from a half-assembled engine far larger than the expected model. "Your message never arrived," he joked while aligning parts. Mira set the axle beside the gears; its polished steel matched the deeper sockets of the unexpected device perfectly. Rowan’s chuckle turned into a quick adjustment of torque settings, and the enlarged machine whirred to life, steam threads curling toward the ceiling. The surrounding benches echoed with soft vibrations, then steadied.
The humming engine rested beneath a lattice of quiet rafters.
