Mara on the Rooftop Garden-

English 原文
Mara eased a wooden crate through the rooftop door while early sunlight painted long stripes across the vegetable beds. The community garden already hummed; trowels clinked, watering hoses hissed, and wind tugged at a row of paper lanterns shaped like tiny ghosts. The steady breeze kept raising spirits higher than their strings intended, so the lanterns bobbed and spun above the parsley. Mara set the crate down, brushed dust from her knees, and checked the fragile seedling she had promised to transplant today.
She knelt by an empty clay pot, slid fingers around the soil lump, and tried to lift up the seedling with its roots intact. The lump refused; hidden roots clung to the crate’s slats. She rocked the stem gently, yet it would not budge. A sudden crane horn from the street below startled her; her hand slipped, and the pot tilted, scattering black earth over her shoes. Another gardener, Leo, reached over, steadied the pot, and offered a quick hug that clapped dust from her shoulders.
Mara laughed without a sound, then adjusted her grip. Together they levered the soil block once more; this time it slid free. Under the loosened earth lay a smooth glass marble the size of a berry, its surface swirling with green threads. Leo tapped it against the light; inside, a tiny air bubble twirled like a trapped dancer. None of them had placed it there. The discovery drew a small circle of hands; the rooftop system briefly paused, hoses silenced, and even the lantern strings fell slack.
Mara set the marble aside and lowered the seedling into fresh soil. She pressed the surface tenderly, tucked spilled dirt back with the edge of her palm, and watered until moisture beaded on the rim. Wind returned, rattling the lantern cords, and the ordinary rhythm of shovels and spray arms resumed. Leo slipped the marble into a shared toolbox for later study, then hoisted the emptied crate toward the stairs. Mara paused, glanced once more at the bobbing lanterns, and noticed the afternoon light sliding across the lettuce beds like slow gold. The watering can stood beside the newly settled planter.
