Rooftop at Noon-

English 原文
Sunlight pressed against the stairwell windows while Mara climbed toward the renovated rooftop of Daleview School. A banner beside the final landing read: “ELEMENTARY CHANGE” in bold, paint-splashed letters, its edges still damp. Beyond the doorway, rows of raised beds held herbs, tomatoes, and bursts of marigold meant to attract any wandering pollinator. A moderate breeze scattered petals over the newly laid gravel, adding soft color to the gray.
Mara balanced a wooden tray packed with seedlings. The latch refused to turn. She shifted her weight, set the tray on a crate, and tried again. Metal rasped; the door opened half a hand’s width, then stuck. One more shove rattled the hinges, and the barrier finally swung inward. Gravel crackled under her shoes as she lifted the tray and stepped into open air, unaware that a second set of footsteps followed at a distance.
Visitors milled between planter boxes, murmuring about soil depth and rain barrels. Near the far railing, a local journalist questioned an unassuming man in rolled-up sleeves. He used no title, yet his nameplate on a nearby foldout table identified him as “Jonas Hale — Philanthropist.” Five years earlier, newspapers had labeled the same Jonas a technology visionary after he patented a low-cost solar tile. Mara paused; childhood memories surfaced when she noticed a faint scar above his eyebrow, a mark left by an errant baseball she had pitched in sixth grade.
Jonas noticed her stare and approached, wiping earth from his palms. “Mara Turner?” he asked, voice lowered so the journalist could not hear. She nodded, still clutching the tray. “Keep the secret,” he added, glancing toward the press badge. Before she could reply, a sudden gust lifted the banner, snapping its rope and sending it drifting like a bright sail. Jonas darted forward, caught the fabric, and laughed at the unexpected scramble that drew every camera away from him. In the brief silence that followed, a striped bee settled on a marigold bloom beside Mara’s ankle. Beside the empty tray, a single bee rested on the glass.
