Mirrors Before Dawn-

English 原文
Lucas threaded through chilled morning air toward the central square. Trolley lines rattled faintly, though no cars approached. He balanced a slim stool under one arm and kept pencils clinking inside a tin. Dawn hovered behind rooftops; the indigo sky held a narrow band of amber along the horizon. He aimed to sketch the instant that first beam struck the shrouded monument newly raised in the square. Workers had departed during the night, leaving ladders stacked like ribs against granite. Lucas quickened; each stride carried graphite lines, and he strove to reach the fountain rim before the square filled with footsteps.
He unfolded the stool near the empty fountain and propped his sketchpad. A cold draft funneled along the arcades, lifting loose sheets. They fluttered over water and skidded against wet stone. He lunged and grabbed the top page, yet charcoal sticks scattered, clinking into the basin. Kneeling, he fished them out; grey ripples widened, bending the monument’s reflection. Behind him, shutters rolled upward; vendors arranged crates, their activity forming a slow but certain tide that pressed closer. Lucas adjusted his angle, mindful to strive for an unobstructed view. Just as he realigned his pad, the cloth around the monument snapped free, released by a hidden mechanism rather earlier than any clock had promised.
The sudden release set a ring of mirrored panels spinning at the base. Morning light bounced from facet to facet, scattering bands of brightness across every surface. An awe-inspiring shimmer danced over shopfront windows, and pupils shrank all around the square. Lucas lifted a forearm against the glare and stepped back onto the fountain’s lip for a higher vantage. Smooth stone met damp boot sole; balance faltered. One heel slid; water slapped his calf; the sketchpad dipped. He jerked upward, splattering droplets that speckled the first outlines. A laugh rippled through early onlookers, then applause followed the monument’s rotation as if the structure itself performed a measured waltz.
Lucas steadied himself, tapped excess water from the page, and let his pencil chase the shifting geometry before the mirrors settled. Sunlight thickened; the horizon lost its blush and turned clear gold. Vendors paused briefly, amused by a painter ankle-deep in the fountain, then resumed stacking fruit, their motions folding back into the larger rhythm of the morning. The panels completed one final half turn and locked in place with a muted click. He filled the remaining space of the sheet with the newly fixed shape, droplets drying into faint rings around the graphite. The square stones glistened under widening daylight.
