Mira balanced a wide cardboard box while crossing the busy quay. She has promised to bring a mouthwatering dish to a themed dinner at sunset. The place that could provide it waited beyond a thick evening market. A food stall beside the river steamed under red lanterns. Rain had fallen earlier, and puddles reflected the shifting strings of light. The path was blocked by visitors who drifted between souvenir tables and painted drums. Warm air carried unique flavors: roasted pepper, sweet coconut, and something smoky. Sail ropes slapped metal poles and shook Mira’s sleeve as she paused.

Light faded quickly, and drums began a quicker rhythm that slowed the crowd. Mira lifted the box above her shoulder and slipped into a lane behind the stalls. Crates blocked the way, yet a rolling barrel opened a small gap near the water. She stepped through; the cook drizzled amber nectar over crisp pastry, not the rice bowl wanted. Steam rose; sugar crackled; the pastry surface shone like glass. The unexpected scent mixed fruit with pepper, and her eyebrows lifted. By the time the last wrapper closed, the quay already looked calmer. Mira placed the hot parcel inside the box and walked toward the pier lights.
