He had carefully planned the decoration during the previous three weeks alone. A fragile paper globe had been painted with swirling ink until its blurred edges resembled cloud wisps at dusk. The old wooden ladder squeaked sharply as he opened its stiff hinges. He placed the first lantern on a rung and paused briefly there. A metal snap echoed, then the lantern slipped; its wire hoop had warped during the cold night.
