English 原文
Autumn light slanted through cracked stained-glass panes as Jonas pushed open the side door of the neighborhood theater. Dust twirled above the red chairs while his boots scraped across the warped boards. He carried a roll of canvas painted with bold green letters; his goal was simple: string it across the proscenium before the evening gathering. A ladder leaned against the wall, but when he dragged it center-stage he almost ran into a forgotten stack of metal music stands that clanged together. Years of scattered playbills, scuffed floorboards, and broken props spoke of long-faded camaraderie; now the wide room waited in stillness for a fresh sign of life.
Jonas climbed the ladder and hooked one corner of the canvas through a small brass ring above, yet the ladder wobbled on a loose plank. A draft slipped through a broken window and snapped the banner against his shoulder, peeling away the fresh tape. He climbed down, folded new tape over the edge, and slid a slate slab under the ladder’s foot for stability. Warm dust clung to his throat; somewhere deeper inside, a faint hum blended with distant traffic. Light bulbs high above cast an uneven glow that flickered like slow lightning, revealing rows of velvet seats faded by experience rather than time alone.
On the second climb he still missed the opposite ring by several inches. He paused, shifted his stance, and gripped the banner lower, but the gap refused to close. Then the timer-controlled houselights clicked off as afternoon shifted toward evening; at the same instant a ventilation fan rumbled awake, pushing a steady column of air across the stage. The breeze lifted the free end of the canvas just high enough for Jonas to loop it onto the ring with the tip of his fingers. He tightened the knot, descended, and stepped back. The room returned to near darkness, and loose tape fluttered under the quiet archway.
