Leo balanced a tall wooden ladder against the gym wall while Maya unfolded a bright cloth banner on the floor. The school fair would open in an hour, and the two friends aimed to lift the banner high above the entrance. A teacher had suggested a simple printed sheet, almost a walk in the park, yet their plan involved stitched fabric and painted symbols. The final panel had been sewn by hand, an act carried out beyond the call of duty, and every seam showed their unwavering commitment. As Maya clipped metal hooks along the top edge, spots of fresh paint still glistened.

Leo had already ascended once, but the first hook slipped; the banner drooped like a tired flag. If they had tested the clips earlier, the cloth would have stayed firm. Undeterred, they added twine, pulling with a great deal of effort until their shoulders trembled. A sudden gust pressed the cloth against the wall, hiding the artwork. Maya’s collar flapped; droplets from last night’s shower shook loose from the gutter and spattered her shoes. She steadied the ladder.
