English 原文
Early afternoon light trickled through layered clouds as Jonas, a wandering historian, approached the time-honored glasshouse at the center of Riverside Botanical Garden. Ivy pressed against iron ribs, and panes carried thin streaks of last night’s rain, each stripe brightening under the returning sun. Jonas pressed a folder against his coat; inside lay sketches for an article on the garden’s long programme of conservation. Somewhere beneath the curved roof, a forgotten wall painting reportedly waited, hidden behind storage racks. Documenting the image before restoration crews rearranged the interior looked like a minor task, yet the possibility of finding color beneath decades of grime pulled his steps forward.
Inside, warm humidity fogged his lenses, and dripping palm leaves tapped rhythmic notes on terrazzo tiles. A narrow service gate barred the western aisle; its bronze latch resisted when Jonas placed his palm against it. The hinge rasped, then held fast. He shifted weight, pushed again, and metal finally yielded, releasing a small puff of dust and a scatter of dried fern fragments. The noise startled two sparrows roosting on the rafters; they shot into the central nave, tipping air that rustled hanging vines. Beyond the gate, mist lines from dormant sprinklers crossed the ceiling like silver pipes, and faint geometrical outlines stained the far wall, exactly where rumor suggested an old mural might linger.
Jonas raised his camera, but a sudden jolt echoed overhead: an engineer testing systems elsewhere had triggered the irrigation cycle. Water burst from a row of nozzles, arcing across space in glittering sheets. Droplets hammered leaves, drummed on glass, and splashed across Jonas’s notebook before he could shield it. He shifted sideways, boot soles squeaking on wet tile, while the unexpected fountain swept loose grime from the wall in patchy rivers. As sediment slid downward, bold turquoise curves and ochre petals emerged, threading across plaster in a pattern brighter than any rumor.
Sprinklers cut off as abruptly as they had started, leaving suspended beads that shimmered in shafts of sunlight. Jonas squeezed moisture from a sleeve, then angled the camera once more. From now on visitors might pause under the palms and notice those revived colors, even before official plaques described their origin. The mural’s revealed blossoms mirrored fresh begonias nearby, linking past and present without announcement or fanfare. Water slowed, pooled along the edge of a floor grate, and quiet shadows rested across the cleaned wall.
