The sudden motion forced a quick lunge that shook the tripod. If he had carried spare batteries, the wait would have felt easier, yet the remaining bar blinked red. He switched the display off, drew calm breaths through parted lips, and watched again.

As midnight approached, the billboard’s light started a programmed fade, each segment dimming to save power across the district. The instant glow weakened, the rooftop slipped into softer shadow, and Korin almost lowered the camera. At that moment dozens of high chirps echoed and bounced against steel vents above the elevator shaft. A small cloud of bats burst from beneath a nearby bridge, riding updrafts the neon had hidden. Automatic long-exposure once set for bright panels now painted crisp silhouettes against the pale sky. When the timer finished, the preview revealed wings frozen in mid-arc, city towers shining below like steel stalagmites. Gradually the traffic noise eased below, and sodium lamps near the curb flickered in broken rhythm. The camera rested beside his foot while wings flashed once more over distant neon.
