The place, now chosen as the secret venue for his article, stood between frequent rumbling freight trains and a line of silent workshops. The iron gate had been painted several times; its chain had been wrapped, then welded. He tugged, but the hinge refused to shift.

He backed away, lifted a loose steel rod, and pressed it between chain links. The mechanism creaked; rust flaked off like pepper, yet the gate still resisted. The dog pressed its shoulder against the lower bar and added unexpected weight. On the third shove, metal scraped over stone and opened just wide enough. Inside, stale air tasted of old paper and grain, perhaps once stored here for sustenance during long winters. His torch flickered; the beam had been weakened by age. Floorboards groaned. A single step later, his boot slid on broken glass, and the torch clattered away, spinning light across cracked posters.

The spinning beam startled a pigeon perched on a railing. Wings erupted; the bird swept upward, knocking a tarpaulin free.
