Oliver's morning routine began before sunrise, inside a small kitchen facing the courtyard. Warm bread smell mingled with orange peel; faint radio music drifted through soft light. He has filled a tray with an abundant breakfast: porridge, fresh fruit, and the savoury pie that remained his favourite dish. The kettle had boiled, and steam curled around stacked cups. Today, he planned to carry the tray outside and watch birds pick seeds. A wobbling paving stone near the threshold had already sent spoons flying last week, so he placed a folded cloth under the cups. Just as he balanced the tray on his forearms, a breeze pushed the curtain toward the stove.

He stepped onto the porch, and the loose stone pressed against his boot again. A gust lifted a napkin that flew across his face, blocked his view, and the tray tilted. A jar of berry jam was knocked sideways by the rolling spoon, yet he caught it before it fell. To keep the load steady, he bent his knees and shuffled, choosing the grass instead of the stone path. At the bench he discovered his neighbour, Haru, who was arranging cups of tea. They laughed without speaking; both had prepared food. They often share stories during quiet mornings, so the double meal caused no trouble. They joined the dishes, and two plates rested side by side, steam rising into the quiet air.
