A small pot containing water has been placed beside the embers. It waited for cocoa before the outdoor gathering begins.

A sudden gust pushed through the clearing, scattering sparks and making the flames bend sideways. Leo stepped back, covering his eyes with an arm as glowing ash skipped over the stones. When he reached for more wood, a yearling deer appeared between the tents and the supply pile. Its thin legs paused, and the animal nosed the very branches he needed. Two obstacles now blocked the plan; smoke swirled toward his face while the deer guarded the wood. Instead of waving or shouting, Leo crouched low beside the stones.

He gathered dried grass nearby and set it on the far side of the fire. Smoke changed direction, drifting toward the grass and away from the pile. The yearling sniffed the new scent, turned, and trotted after the curling ribbon of smoke. Space cleared, Leo hurried to claim the free branches and fed them into the campfire.
