Milo knelt on the weathered boards of the footbridge that crossed the wide estuary. A flock of egrets wheeled above the shining flats, and he raised his phone for a snapshot. The next gust spun the device from his fingers; it slid between two planks and landed face-up in gray mud. Brackish water crept landward with the turning tide, ready to claim anything it touched. Milo lowered a hand through the gap, but the distance defeated his reach.

Clara, leaning on a bicycle nearby, noticed the scramble and walked over. Without a word, she pressed her shoe against one plank while Milo pressed on another. The wood refused to lift; rusted nails still had strength to withstand their combined weight. Milo unfolded a pocketknife, slipped the small blade beside a nail, and used the handle as leverage. A crack echoed; the plank rose just enough for Clara to slide her fingers underneath and haul it clear. Mud sucked at the loosened board, splashing their sleeves.

Behind the bridge, a low concrete gate opened with a mechanical groan as the upstream reservoir released its scheduled spill. The extra current pushed a thin wave across the flats. Milo’s phone rocked in the surge like a stranded leaf and began to drift. He waded to mid-calf, lifting his coat to conserve the dry pockets above the waterline, and guided the device back toward Clara’s waiting hands. While doing so, his boot struck a glass bottle half-buried in silt; bubbles spiraled from its mouth, showing it had only just surfaced.

Milo lugged the bottle onto the bridge. Barnacles crusted the glass, but the interior remained clear: a tiny brass compass lay inside, needle still swinging. Clara tilted it toward the light, her eyebrows arching. Neither spoke; only gulls provided commentary as they circled overhead. Water settled once again, the tide now spreading into reed beds beyond. Milo set the rescued phone beside the unexpected find. A final heartbeat of wind rattled loose reeds, then stilled. Water lapped against the loosened plank and the glass bottle rested between their boots.
