Clara’s elbow brushed the railing; Milo’s boot tapped the wall. Neither spoke. The steady scrape of wood against stone filled the silence.

Halfway up, the gunwale hit a jutting pipe and stopped cold. The canoe hung diagonally, blocking the passage and pressing Clara’s shoulder into the baluster. He looped the rope around the thwart like a harness, then leaned over the rail and lowered the free end to Clara. She tugged; the rope stretched more than expected, yet the canoe shifted only a finger’s width before wedging again. The moment stretched; air hummed with strain. Suddenly the brittle pipe behind them quivered, then broke away. A trickle turned into a thin stream, and cool water slid across the steps. The surprise jolt startled Clara; her heels slipped, knees bumped the canoe, and a hidden locker under the middle seat sprang open. A stack of old glass bottles rolled out, clinking and scattering down the wet stairs.

The rolling bottles lightened the load enough for Milo to lift his side higher. Water hurried past their boots, carrying two bottles into a corner and leaving silt trails on each tread. Working in shorter bursts, the pair nudged, tilted, and finally coaxed the canoe clear of the snag. They eased it through the doorway at the top just as the leaking pipe quieted to occasional drops. The empty canoe rested across two crates beside the drain.
