The sight stalled her steps. A light gust crossed the bank, forcing retreating water to fold away from the creatures; in that moment many lifted together, their pale undersides flashing. The pattern resembled a living mosaic that rearranged with every small wave. Tide and wind worked together, erasing dry sand and tugging at the loose camera strap. She hurried back, shoving the paddleboat until it floated clear.
