English 原文
Milo angled his bicycle against a moss-covered wall and pushed at the greenhouse door of the derelict municipal arboretum. The latch resisted; metal rasped, and the whole frame shuddered before yielding. Dust drifted inside, then settled on a solitary wooden bench warped by years of damp air. He unpacked sketchbook and charcoal, stepping around fern fronds that had crept over cracked tiles. Above, panels of glass carried blotches where algae had formed their own silent mosaics, yet sunlight still dropped in broad needles. A painted rainforest scene covered one interior wall, its once vibrant colors now patchy but unmistakable: orchids flaring pink, lianas swinging, insect wings caught mid-beat. A faint drip echoed from somewhere deeper, marking steady seconds and minutes. Milo’s goal was simple—record what remained before the roof gave way entirely.
He set the sketchbook on his knees and traced the first swoop of a vine. Outside the painted frame, the living ecosystem pressed close. Real vines clung to beams; beetles crossed them, and a tiny green lizard flicked its tail at a passing fly. Each movement reminded him how paint and life intertwined, part of a larger food web that worked whether anyone watched or not. A gust rattled loose glass; the bench rocked, jolting his hand and smudging charcoal across a painted parrot. He frowned, wiped the mark with the side of his palm, and tightened his grip. From overhead, a flake of dried leaf spiraled down, landing on the page like a deliberate stroke.
Another rustle followed, lighter than the glass tremor yet sharper than settling leaves. Milo glanced up. A real bird clung upside-down to a peeling beam just above the mural’s canopy. Cinnamon wings, barred tail, and a chisel of a beak identified a xenops, far from the forests listed in guidebooks. Its head bobbed; then it hopped onto the painted branch, aligning perfectly with the missing parrot he had just smudged. His breath paused; charcoal hung still between his fingers. The tiny carpenter probed the wooden wall, dislodging grains of old paint that drifted like powdered pollen onto his page, filling the gap he had created. After a final tap, the bird darted toward a roof crack, vanished, and left a wispy feather to twirl onto the bench. Milo placed the feather between two pages, closed his book, and walked back toward the squeaking door. Glass panes above rested in muted green light.
