Mark pushed the heavy auditorium door, and stale air slipped out like trapped breath. A weak beam from the cracked skylight crossed dusty rows of seats and rested on the blackboard. On its surface, chalk ghosts of diagrams remained: paired oak leaves, tiny squirrels, arrows showing mutualism blurred by years of rain and wind. Mark had come to copy those lines before renovation erased everything. The hall had been used by a famed biology lecturer fifty years earlier, and rumor said the chalk was original. If the skylight had stayed clear, photographs would have been easier, yet the glass carried a film of grime.

He unfolded a tall easel, but the back leg snagged on torn carpet and tilted sideways. After straightening it, he noticed the chalk marks were still too faint; rubbing exposed more dust than shape. Twenty minutes passed, and he had made little headway. His backpack held a single lamp, yet the socket nearest the board produced no power. A bird fluttered above the rafters, shaking more grit across his paper. Mark's earlier mindset, fixed on perfection, slipped; he wiped sweat, then searched for another angle. A narrow balcony overlooked the board, though railing bars blocked a full view.

He dragged a seat beneath the balcony and climbed, sketchpad balanced on one arm. The higher position revealed deeper grooves the chalk had scratched; lines brightened when grazing light struck them. Still, some arrows vanished under shadow, so he angled a pocket mirror to redirect daylight. The balcony bars divided his canvas, forcing a compromise: separate sheets instead of one. Piece by piece he traced every symbol until fresh marks formed a complete image across the floor. When he stepped down, curled pages lay side by side, matching the forgotten original. Dust motes hung in the still air above their finished sketch.
