Mia pushed a metal spade into the ground behind the shed. Her brown dog, Bristle, circled the fresh hole, ears turning toward every small movement. Warm air carried the scent of cut grass, and distant crickets stitched soft sound into the evening. She wanted to plant a young maple before sunset so its roots could settle overnight and take root. But the soil felt like packed clay; every strike stopped after only a few centimeters.

On her third attempt, the spade rang against hidden metal. She brushed soil aside and uncovered a forgotten bicycle, its rusty saddle still fixed to the frame. Judging by the thick rust, it had been buried for years, its paint almost gone. Bristle backed away, tail wagging, as a beetle crawled from the tangle. The surprise forced her to change plan. Instead of digging deeper, she dragged the frame free and poured water into the loosened earth. Steam rose when cool water touched the warm clay, and the ground finally softened.

Roots of surrounding weeds showed perseverance, weaving through cracks along the fence. Yet the thin maple trunk revealed an inner strength as it stayed straight in the widened hole. Mia lowered soil around it, pressed gently with both hands, and added fallen leaves for shade. She overcame a few stubborn stones before the surface lay even. Bristle dropped a small stick beside the trunk, as if donating decoration. The last light touched the new leaves, and breeze turned them in quiet circles.

圍欄旁的雜草根部展現出倔強，穿過縫隙蜿蜒而行。細瘦的楓樹幹卻顯露出內在的支撐，在拓寬的洞裡保持直立。米婭把泥土回填，用雙手輕輕壓實，又撒上落葉遮蔭。她清除了幾塊頑石，地面才變得平整。布里斯托把一根小木枝放在樹旁，像是在裝飾。最後一道光照到新葉，微風讓葉片靜靜旋轉。
