English 原文
Low tide left the wooden pier creaking above a pale strip of sand. Mateo carried a fresh pot of marine paint. He wanted to inspect and repaint the battered skiff that lay beside the pier before dusk. A grey cat followed, weaving between his ankles and pausing whenever a crab clicked past. The skiff’s hull, still glossy in patches, leaned against an iron ring once meant as an anchor point. The old ring grated each time the boat rocked, and the sound mixed with gull cries across the bay. Mateo had already scraped loose flakes from the bow during the morning, yet hidden boards remained soft.
He climbed aboard, but his weight pushed the stern deeper into mud, and water seeped through a hairline crack. If the tide had been higher, the skiff would have floated out of reach, so he hurried. The ladder had been left to rust beside the pier, so he balanced on crates instead. One crate slipped and toppled paint into the sand. While he steadied himself, the cat jumped onto the deck. Its paws pressed a warped plank, and a hollow clack echoed. Curious, Mateo lifted the plank. Inside the gap lay a deck of bright cards, a faded wand, and a silk scarf—props from someone’s forgotten magic trick.
The discovery changed his task. Before lifting another tool, he brushed sand from the objects and arranged them on the seat. “My declaration of victory for the day,” he whispered, amused that the cat had become assistant rather than spectator. He had checked surrounding timbers earlier. Several were braced by thin copper bars, suggesting someone once cared more for appearances than seaworthiness. Mateo decided to patch the crack anyway. He packed the cards into his bag; perhaps a historian at the maritime museum would want them. Evening light deepened, and gentle ripples tapped wood. Light from the bay rested on the cat and the tilted boat.
