Midday heat lay over the wide savanna; dry grass crackled under a thin wind. A young zebra stopped near a line of low stones, ears twitching. Beyond them, a shallow pond reflected silver dots. He stepped onto a narrow track that hugs a dark cliff rising from the flat landscape. Pebbles slipped, and dust was lifted by each hoof. Calm air hovered close to the rock, yet the ground felt rough under his weight. A sharp click sounded; a lizard dashed across the path. The zebra sprang sideways, and his back hoof sent a sheet of gravel sliding beyond the edge.

The scattered stones revealed a hidden ramp of packed sand that sloped gently downward. The zebra lowered his head, sniffed the fresh earth, and turned toward the opening. The ramp curved away from the cliff and joined the open ground. Clouds have thinned since morning, and new light reached the grass. He broke into an easy gallop, hooves thudding in steady rhythm. Warm air rolled past his flanks while insects lifted around his strides. At the pond’s rim, water trembled beneath his muzzle. Ripples widened, then settled. The zebra stood ankle-deep, drinking while tall reeds swayed, and the savanna lay calm again.

散落的石子露出一道隱蔽的砂坡，坡面緩緩向下。斑馬低頭嗅著新翻的泥土，轉身走向開口。砂坡離開峭壁，連接到開闊地面。自早晨以來雲層已經變薄，新光線照到草叢。牠開始輕快奔跑，蹄聲節奏穩定。溫暖的空氣掠過身側，昆蟲隨步伐飄起。抵達水塘邊，水面在牠的鼻端顫動。漣漪擴散後又平靜。斑馬站在及踝水中飲水，高草搖曳，稀樹草原再度安靜。
