A single strip of fluorescent light buzzed above the small market counter while Milo balanced the last stack of coins. He had spent the afternoon as cashier, sliding groceries across the scanner and dropping receipts into a tin box; now only the paperwork waited. Outside, wind pressed against the doorframe and slipped through the mail slot, lifting a faint scent of river mud. Milo braced one elbow on the counter, nudged a column of coins into place, and began entering totals.

A stronger gust pushed the door wider. Pages fluttered, then the ledger flipped shut with a thud that rocked the coins.
