When the Calculator Slid-

English 原文
A single strip of fluorescent light buzzed above the small market counter while Milo balanced the last stack of coins. He had spent the afternoon as cashier, sliding groceries across the scanner and dropping receipts into a tin box; now only the paperwork waited. The ledger lay open, columns of ink marching across the page, and a plastic calculator blinked zeros beside it. Outside, wind pressed against the doorframe and slipped through the mail slot, lifting a faint scent of river mud. Milo braced one elbow on the counter, nudged a column of coins into place, and began entering totals.
A stronger gust pushed the door wider. Pages fluttered, then the ledger flipped shut with a thud that rocked the coins. Several rolled free; the calculator skidded after them and clacked onto the floor. Milo lunged, caught the ledger, and knelt to reach the runaway device. While his hand searched under the counter his fingers touched something smooth—a glass marble, once displayed as a curiousity near the chewing gum. It had wedged itself against a loose skirting board. Milo eased the board aside, intending only to recover the marble, yet the gap revealed a wooden cube no larger than a plum. Each face carried faded numbers burned into the grain, the strokes neat but unfamiliar. He set the cube on the counter, wiped dust from its edges, and retrieved the calculator before another draft arrived.
Numbers already filled his evening, but the odd cube interrupted the rhythm. Milo turned it, comparing the burnt symbols with figures in the ledger. None matched. He powered the calculator, tapped sequences that mirrored the cube’s faces, and waited for a pattern; nothing aligned. Wind rattled an empty cart outside while overhead the light flickered again. Milo began to ponder whether an earlier clerk had hidden a homemade puzzle or if the cube merely plugged a gap behind the board. Each possibility felt ordinary, yet the object’s weight carried intention. He spun it once more; the digits caught the light, then stilled. The wind settled, coins stopped trembling, and the pages of the ledger stayed flat. The wooden cube rested beside the silent calculator.
