Warm afternoon light lay across the wooden bench.
A small squirrel leaped between quiet branches.
It paused when a picnic basket sat on the seat.
A shining wrapper peeked from the partly open lid.
Muffled crackles rose, an exciting sound.
The squirrel dropped onto the basket and sniffed the gap.
Sweet aroma drifted out and touched its twitching nose.
Inside rested a round delight wrapped in silver paper.
The squirrel pushed against the lid, but leather straps held.
The goal sat close, yet the path stayed blocked.
The squirrel gripped a loose strap knot with sharp teeth.
It tugged hard; the knot slipped and whipped forward.
The sudden jerk tipped the basket onto one corner.
A plastic cup rolled out, lines of usage across plastic.
The cup struck the wrapper, and bright color dots spilled.
Candies rang against wide metal slats.
The lid slipped open at last.
The squirrel darted inside, seized delight.
It dashed up, tail spraying crumbs.
Leaves shook as the squirrel vanished among higher branches.
