The Ball That Surfaced- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Soft grey clouds drifted above the quiet waterfront. A young otter slid from reeds onto a worn stone step. Salt air mixed with the smell of moss. An orange ball bobbed between gentle ripples beyond the step. Whiskers flicked, and the otter paddled toward the bright toy. The otter angled its body, guiding the ball toward a flat rock.

Each small wave pushed the ball farther from the waiting rock. To keep up, the otter swam harder, yet rising chop unbalanced its body. At the pier, afternoon playtime had filled the air with shouts and footsteps. One sharp shout from a boy motivated several gulls to burst upward. Their beating wings stirred fresh waves that bumped the drifting toy sideways. The ball was pushed under a low ladder that has rusted near the water.

A commuter ferry swept past, and its wake lifted the ball onto the ladder’s middle rung. The otter climbed the metal frame, claws scraping over wet paint. From there, a final shove sent the ball rolling onto the original rock. Small fish, plentiful under the surface, flashed silver near the otter’s feet. Spray dripped, and the clouds overhead drifted on without hurry. The ball rocked gently while the otter tapped it with a quick paw.

一艘通勤渡輪掠過，尾流把球抬上梯子的中段橫桿。水獺爬上金屬框架，爪子在濕漉漉的油漆上發出摩擦聲。接著，最後一推讓球滾上原先目標的岩石。水面下，成群小魚在豐富的水草間閃著銀光。水花滴落，頭頂的雲層慢慢漂移。球輕輕搖晃，水獺用靈巧的前爪輕拍它。
