Milo reached the lower rung first, sneakers thudding against wood that had absorbed the morning rain. Leena followed, one palm steadying a bright paper lantern while the other gripped the ladder. Wind bumped against the trunk, branches flexed, and the rope ladder swung, but both children slipped through the square opening into the treehouse. Inside, dust motes drifted across narrow beams of light. A rough shelf waited for the lantern, yet its surface tilted forward. Milo tapped it, and the board wobbled. Their silent observance of a trail of ants marching along the edge lasted only a breath before the board lurched again and pressed the insects toward the gap.

The slanted shelf bothered Milo. He dug a piece of chalk from his pocket, wedged it under one corner, and the shelf steadied. A creak answered from the opposite wall; a loose plank slid half an inch and then refused another move. Milo pushed harder, shoulders braced, but the plank stayed firm, as though the tree itself tried to arrest any further shift. Leena set the lantern down and picked up Milo’s handmade slingshot, testing the pull of the rubber band. The rubber stretched, squeaked, and flicked back against her wrist. She winced, shook her hand, and stepped nearer the open window where breath of the wind cooled the sting.

Milo turned, saw the slingshot in motion, and reached to take it. At that instant the band slipped from Leena’s fingers, snapped across the room, and struck the lantern’s hanging cord. The lantern swung wide, tapped the ceiling once, and a thin veil of sawdust fell like dry rain. Both children froze mid-step. The swinging light revealed a narrow joint behind the stubborn plank; the impact had cracked old resin along its edge. Milo wedged two fingers inside and pulled. Wood groaned, splinters fell, and the plank eased outward, revealing only a palm-sized hollow packed with brittle leaves and a single tarnished button. Leena tilted her head, brushed leaves aside, and set the forgotten button on the shelf next to the lantern. Outside, a bird clattered through the branches and kept flying, dislodging more dust that drifted through the window before settling on the floorboards.

Outside, leaves hung motionless beneath a thin veil of afternoon light.

那塊傾斜木架讓米洛在意。他從口袋掏出粉筆，塞在木架一角，木架便穩住。對面牆傳來咯吱聲，一塊鬆動木板滑出半寸後就不再動。米洛雙肩用力推，可那木板彷彿整棵樹要阻止似的，硬是不肯再讓。莉娜放下燈籠，拿起米洛自製的彈弓，拉了拉橡皮筋。橡皮被拉伸、吱吱作響，又彈回敲到她手腕。她蹙眉甩甩手，走到開窗邊讓風降低刺痛。

米洛轉身看到彈弓滑動，伸手去接。就在這時，皮筋從莉娜指間脫落，彈過屋子擊中燈籠吊繩。燈籠大幅擺動，輕敲屋頂，一層細鋸屑像乾雨落下。兩個孩子動作頓住。搖晃燈光照出那塊木板後方一道狹縫，撞擊裂開了舊膠。米洛伸兩指進去一拉，木頭呻吟著脫落，只現一個巴掌大的空洞，裡面塞滿脆葉子和一顆失色扣子。莉娜偏頭，撥開葉片，把孤零扣子放在燈籠旁木架上。屋外，一隻鳥撞過枝條又飛走，驚落更多塵埃從窗飄入，最後靜靜落在地板。

屋外，葉片停懸在午後薄光的輕紗下。
