The Planter That Hid a Kitten-

English 原文
Mia balanced a clay planter against her hip while Joel steadied the balcony door with one shoulder. The apartment’s narrow hall gave them little room, yet the planter needed the morning light that spilled across the railing and the street it overlooked. Inside the pot, a glossy orchid stood tall, every aerial root whispering that it was famously high-maintenance. Behind the orchid, smaller seedlings tilted in makeshift cups; Mia had spent last season fostering them under a kitchen lamp. Far yonder, a church bell chimed, its slow clang folding through the Sunday hush.
At the doorframe the planter halted. The rim scraped brick, grit showered Joel’s shoe, and soil packed itself tighter. He twisted first; the weight only shifted back. Mia knelt, nudged one edge up, and the opposite edge sank lower. A passerby’s whistle drifted up from the alley, mingling with the faint hum of traffic below. The planter refused each adjustment, a quiet display of simple physics blocking their progress.
Joel paused, wiped dust from his palms, and tried again from a new angle. The planter tilted; a dark line split down the potting mix. A round shape rolled forward, stopped, rolled again, then burst through the crack—a damp, blinking furball no bigger than a teacup. It shook once, sending crumbs of soil across Mia’s sleeve, and fixed both humans with bright marble eyes. The kitten’s tiny ribs moved in quick bursts; a dropped apricot seed lay beside its paw, maybe the clue to how it had burrowed there unnoticed.
Mia eased the planter the final centimeter past the frame, and Joel set it on a wooden plank near the rail. Wind rocked the orchid; loose leaves circled the kitten, now nosing around the spilled dirt as if inspecting new territory. A neighbor’s curtain fluttered, revealing another watcher before settling back into stillness. The tiny furball rested on the warm plank beside the swaying planter.
