What the Rising Tide Pushed Forward-

English 原文
Thin mist drifted above the sand, and distant gull cries echoed under an overcast sky. Clara’s boots pressed wet prints while Jasper, her mottled terrier, circled ahead. Beyond a broken fence stood an abandoned laboratory: concrete walls, cracked windows, and a single iron gate. Through its grid she spotted a sophisticated brass instrument resting on a worktable, the kind that tracked the tide for earlier researchers. Sketching it for her science journal would be impressive among her classmates, so she paced toward the gate, sketchbook tucked under one arm.
The gate refused to move. Rust gripped every hinge, and the latch remained firmly horizontal. Clara slipped a flat stone between bars and prodded upward; the bar squeaked yet stayed closed. If the crate beside her had been higher, her fingers would have reached the latch without tools. She stacked driftwood pieces, climbed, and pushed again, but the gap still mocked her reach. Etched marks along the frame caught her attention; she had been taught that numbers spoke a language, yet the semantics of these fading arrows puzzled her. Jasper barked once, shook spray from his coat, and pawed at something glittering near the fence corner.
A rising wave rolled a loosened plank against that corner, and the plank shoved Jasper’s discovery forward: the brass cylinder itself. Repeated tumbling inside the crumbling room had moved the gauge until a final knock freed it through a hole in the mesh. The cylinder had been polished by decades of waves until it shone, even under dull light. Clara knelt, turned the device slowly, and traced its glass face while the dog sniffed each dent. Sketching could wait; first she watched seawater drip from its delicate gearwork. Foam from the incoming tide settled around their footprints.
