Mara Beneath the Warehouse Door-

English 原文
Late on Saturday, Mara pushed the warehouse door that separated her from her grandfather’s forgotten tools. Dust drifted, and the hanging bulbs flickered like torches inside a stone dungeon. She had always promised herself a visit, yet no chance had appeared until that afternoon. Finding the small wooden chest rumoured to hold his sketchbooks drove every careful step across the cluttered floor. Shelves leaned, crates towered, and each movement nudged loose nails into faint spirals over cracked boards. When one box collapsed, scattered gears revealed a tarnished key that glinted beneath powdered rust. Her pulse drummed, and she tucked the key into her pocket before the hanging bulbs dimmed further.
Deep between towering crates, Mara discovered an iron locker, and a circular dial with raised numbers secured its door. The dial’s face displayed tangled lines; the pattern resembled digital encryption hammered into metal decades before computers existed. She turned the dial, tried the key, and pulled the handle, yet nothing shifted. If she had remembered the locker’s layout from old family stories, she would have avoided the delay. Instead, she mapped each groove with chalk to reduce the complexity and reveal hidden clicks. Chalk dust whitened her fingertips, and, after one final spin, the heavy door swung inward with a metallic sigh.
Inside the locker, the missing chest waited beneath a canvas tarp. It had been carved with winding vines, and a fragile brass latch held it shut. The latch stuck; Mara wedged the key sideways, tapped it with a wrench, and the lid sprang loose. Her arms trembled while lifting notebooks, gears, and an unexpected miniature glass globe wrapped in faded ribbon. A sudden slip sent the globe rolling; it knocked a plank that exposed a narrow stair descending beneath the locker. She drew a long breath, straightened her spine, and climbed down, brushing cobwebs that caught on her sleeves. The brick corridor ended at a chamber no larger than a pantry, where a copper bicycle leaned against the wall. Morning light softly rested on the quiet bicycle and the curled cat.
