Ruby draped a line of paper lanterns above the small yard, aiming to brighten the coming dusk. A distant cheer rose from the playground beyond the hedge, and a soft melody slid from an ice-cream van that had parked by the gate. A striped cat balanced on the garden wall, its ears turning toward every new rustle. Families who celebrate a match on the nearby field added short bursts of clapping that mixed with the street sounds. Ruby climbed a low stool, clicked the string of bulbs together, and checked that each tiny lamp shone. One plug, which had been repaired many times, held only by a brittle tape, already felt loose in her fingers.

Warm air drifted past, carrying cut grass and charcoal smoke; colored papers flicked against one another. A stronger gust arrived, and the lanterns swung in unison, yanking the cable so the loose connection blinked dark. The cat jumped down as the stool shifted, and Ruby steadied herself. Instead of trying the same approach, she tied spare garden twine from the center of the line to a heavy watering can, lowering the tension. She then pushed the plug deeper into its socket and wrapped fresh tape around the join. Light returned, steady this time. The cat circled the glowing shapes and settled near Ruby’s feet while the playground sounds faded. Above them, the lanterns glimmered quietly against the first blue of evening.
