Fluorescent plates buzzed overhead, and their white glare spilled across polished tiles that showed every footstep. A grey tabby padded ahead of Maya, its tail flicking in quick arcs. The journalist had one clear task: reach the glass laboratory at the end of the corridor and photograph a prototype battery. According to the schedule, a visiting scientist had already set the device on a metal bench, the result of months of patient research. She adjusted her camera strap and quickened her pace.

A sliding door blocked her first attempt; its sensor failed to notice her presence. She moved sideways, waving both arms until the panel cracked open halfway, then jammed. The cat squeezed through with ease, but the gap remained too narrow for a person. Maya braced one shoulder against the frame, metal groaning while she pushed. The effort worked on the third shove, yet a cart loaded with glass flasks rolled forward from inside and locked one wheel against her boot. She bent, shifted the cart two centimetres, and the obstacle finally rolled aside. As she stepped into the room, the door closed behind her and clicked; the handle refused to turn when she tugged it.
