English 原文
Sunlight broke the surface in wavering stripes, and warm water slipped between Mia’s fingers as she adjusted her mask. She and Luca floated above a sprawling coral reef, each pocket of stone and branch glowing like painted glass. Mia had prepared the small waterproof camera the night before; its strap circled her wrist now. Far beneath their fins, a multitude of silvery fish moved in loose spirals, scattering whenever shadow passed. A muffled crackle from tiny shrimp filled the quiet. The siblings planned one clear photograph of a bright parrotfish that often drifted near the outer ledge.
Luca steadied the camera and pressed forward, yet drifting sand blurred the first attempt. He swung left and tried again; this time a sudden surge lifted him, and the lens caught only empty water. Their target slipped deeper, scales flashing once like a metal coin. While Mia adjusted the strap for a lower angle, an octopus eased from a crevice. Its broad body blended with mottled rock, but one curious tentacle stretched toward the shiny lens. Soft suction marks pressed against the glass, covering every corner. The unexpected visitor had been unnoticed by either snorkeler until that silent embrace blocked the view entirely.
Mia tapped the plastic housing, and tiny vibrations ran along the rubber arm. The octopus loosened its grip, then slipped beneath a shelf of coral, clouds of fine silt rolling after it. Luca breathed slowly through his snorkel, waiting for the haze to clear. Instead of the parrotfish, a dull metal glimmer rose from the sand. The cephalopod returned, balancing an old brass key against one mottled arm as if offering flotsam from another dive. Luca lifted the key; the octopus drifted away and vanished among branching coral. Fish soon re-formed their shifting circle, but the photograph remained untaken. The brass key hung from Luca’s finger above the rippling sand.
