The Slippery Step-

English 原文
Morning light filtered through the back stairwell window, drawing narrow bars across the walls. Leo balanced a wooden planter box against his hip while Mira checked the first step. Cool air smelled of damp concrete, and faint traffic noise hummed outside. A slug glistened on the lower tread, shining like a tiny spilled marble. Their goal was simple: ascend the staircase and place the box on the rooftop balcony.
The planter weighed more than expected, and the rough boards scraped their shirts. Fresh tape had been added earlier to enhance grip, yet edges still bit into fingers. Halfway up, the narrow turn became the second obstacle; the railing blocked any wide swing. Leo pushed first, but the box wedged against the wall that curved toward a skylight.
While they argued over space, the slug reached the middle step and left a silver ribbon. Mira's shoe slipped on that ribbon, jolting the box and forcing both arms upward. Perseverance alone could not free it, so Leo slid his backpack under the bottom edge. The softer surface lifted the planter just enough; Mira angled her side upward with a grunt. Together they pivoted, and the box cleared the railing without extra noise or damage. Drops from the slug's trail still gleamed behind them, but the staircase stayed open ahead. A loose shingle scraped against the gutter above.
