English 原文
Milo stepped into the quiet square just after the rainstorm. Puddles glazed the worn cobblestones, and the paint on the old café tables looked freshly drenched. For weeks he had kept his small sketchbook dry, waiting for the moment when the clock tower would reflect clearly in the largest puddle; today he hoped to catch that mirror image and draw its faint cracks before another visitor disturbed the water. Green streaks ran down the clock’s copper roof, hinting at seasons that had faded the metal little by little. Weeds poked through gaps once filled with mortar, recording years of creeping expansion.
He crouched near the rim, but a slow drip from a tilted gutter threaded ripples across the surface and blurred every line. Above him, a murmuration of starlings drew widening loops against the grey sky, their shapes shifting faster than his pencil could follow. Each time he adjusted, another bead dropped, and the tower returned to soft haze rather than sharp resolution. He slid a flat stone under the gutter’s mouth to divert the drip; the stone wobbled and slipped, sending a splash over his knee.
Footsteps sloshed behind him. Lila, carrying a bright umbrella patterned with gears, stopped at the edge of the square. She glanced at his soaked trouser leg and moved closer. Without a word, she angled her umbrella beneath the gutter. Water struck the fabric instead of the puddle and rolled safely onto a drain. Milo nodded; still, the remaining ripples refused to calm. A gust arrived, and the starlings dropped low, their wing beats stirring air over the puddle and scattering the image once more. The disturbance felt unprecedented; the birds usually kept to the rooftops. Lila knelt, lifted her free hand, and the umbrella tilted, echoing the birds’ curve. In that brief alignment, the flock banked away, and the water flattened.
For three slow breaths, the clock tower floated on the puddle’s surface so clearly that every chipped numeral looked freshly carved. Then the unexpected happened: a single feather, separated from the flock, drifted down and touched the calm sheet. Concentric rings blossomed, and the perfect outline dissolved into living motion. Milo pressed a page, capturing the moment before it vanished entirely. The feather spun, drifted toward a drain, and disappeared. Across the square, sunlight slid from behind the clouds, brightening damp stone, while a loose shingle scraped against the gutter above.
