Discarded cups and colored streamers dotted the meadow, leftovers from yesterday’s feast that had filled the field with music and smoke. A moderate breeze now nudged paper plates across flattened grass; one plate still showed a cartoon lamb leaping over a crescent moon. Near the fence, a damp napkin clung to a post, its faded print of a crowned stag barely visible through dried sauce. Leo walked between the scraps, scanning the ground for his missing steel ladle. Sunlight flashed from a drainage trench beside the path, and the gleam matched the curve of the utensil’s bowl.

The trench held ankle-deep water mixed with dark sediment. Leo tested the depth with his boot and stopped when his sole sank. He searched the littoral clutter until he found a broken tent pole. The hollow aluminum made a quick, useful tool; he stretched it toward the glint. On the first push the pole slipped, stirring a murky swirl that hid everything. He steadied his feet, angled the pole beneath the surface, and pressed again. Resistance grew; something heavy shifted but refused to lift.

He braced the pole against the trench edge and levered upward. The buried object slid sideways instead of rising. Sediment billowed like brown smoke, then parted. A small tin canister, its lid sealed tight, rocked free and rolled toward him. Flakes of paint flared red and gold on its side—a parade scene with musicians trailing behind a painted stag. Leo fished the tin onto the grass, surprised by the unexpected prize. The ladle’s reflection no longer flashed in the water; perhaps it lay deeper, or perhaps someone else had already taken it.

He tapped the lid, but rust fused the seam, and his fingers slipped. For now he left the canister untouched, placed it near his pack, and rinsed the pole in the trench. A jay skimmed the treetops, startling a distant lamb that bolted along the far hedge. Leo glanced once more at the sluggish channel; no fresh metal winked back. Mud-streaked water pooled beneath the tilted tin.

他把桿子抵在溝邊，再次發力。那物體滑向一旁而非上升。沈積物像褐色煙霧般散開，緊接著又聚攏。一只小鐵罐脫離泥沙，晃晃悠悠地滾到他腳邊。罐身脫落的漆片閃著紅金色——畫面是一隻雄鹿帶領樂隊遊行。意外得來的鐵罐讓李奧愣了一下。閃光不再出現在水面；勺子或許被掩得更深，或者乾脆被別人撿走了。

他敲了敲蓋子，鏽蝕把縫隙緊緊黏住，手指一滑便作罷。他把鐵罐暫放在背包旁，又把桿子在溝裡沖洗。松鴉掠過樹梢，遠處的一隻小羊受驚沿著樹籬狂奔。李奧最後瞥向那條緩慢流動的水道；水面再也沒有閃動的金屬光。沾滿泥痕的水在傾斜的鐵罐下方匯成一汪。
