Lucy held a bright comic issue under her arm. Her goal was simple: give it to her cousin Ben. Belief hung over the quiet hall, steady as the ceiling lights. Cool night air touched her cheeks. She stepped past the main desk of the small hospital. Footsteps echoed along the bright corridor. Lucy listened to them fade toward distant stairs.

A soft conversation drifted from a room behind a curtain. Lucy turned, and the comic slid from her arm. It skated across the floor and stopped under a metal cart. The cart rolled a little, bumping a tall water jug. Water splashed, and paper cups scattered over the tiles. Lucy grabbed a long plastic ruler from a supply shelf. She crouched and pushed the ruler under the cart. The comic issue slid back within her reach. She stood up, wiping drops from the cover. Ben appeared in the doorway, already dressed to leave. A nurse rolled his empty bed past them toward another room. Lucy tucked the comic into her bag and followed. A thin stream of water kept moving between the tiles.
