English 原文
A palm-sized wooden box lay tilted in wet sand. Brass corners dulled and the lid sat under a crust of dried salt. Pale engravings circled the wood, catching daylight like threads of silver. Warm air drifted upward from the river stones; distant gulls wheeled above and water tapped against reed stalks. Leo spotted the strange shape first and crouched, brushing grains aside with the edge of his sleeve. The box refused to move; sand gripped the lower edge, and each tug only filled the carvings with more grit.
Mira knelt beside him; her elbow nudged his, and together they scooped a shallow trench around the stubborn object. When they lifted it free, a thin jet of water escaped the pocket beneath, darkening the sand between their shoes. A glimpse of reddish ink flashed under the engravings before fresh sand stuck to the surface again, turning certainty into guesswork. Neither spoke; their shoulders leaned closer, and breath slowed in unplanned rhythm.
Beside a driftwood log, the pair set the box on their knees and studied its hinge. Rust had fused the hinge, so Mira found a flat pebble while Leo lifted the lid toward light from yonder dunes. After two careful taps, the lid breathed out stale river mud through a narrow gap. An elated shout burst from Mira when the wood finally lifted. Inside lay folded parchment, edges curled like dry leaves. The first sheet seemed to chronicle storm clouds racing across a field, two tiny figures locked in a fateful encounter. Leo tilted the page, and the reddish stroke glimpsed earlier glowed as lightning between the figures, not a border at all. He slid the fragile sheets back, closed the lid, and wrapped the box in his scarf. Both rose and turned toward the silent footpath. Leo stood the box upright inside his pack.
