The sun is bright. Warm air hangs over them. Sam sweeps the garden path. His broom pushes dry leaves aside. Leaves slide toward a low stone. Lily enters the gate. She carries eight flowers in new cups. Each flower sits in thin paper cups. A loose pebble stops her boot.

The tray tilts toward the ground. Sam hears pots scrape the wood. He steps forward and steadies them. The broom drops beside his foot. A small green frog jumps from the leaves. Lily gasps and almost drops things. Sam shifts the tray higher. The frog hops away into tall grass. The gate stood open now.
