Joel carried a damp white sheet up the narrow metal stairs. He hoped to navigate the crowded balcony. The cloth needed to dry before another cloud arrived. A wren perched on the highest part of the drying line. Joel slowed, yet the sheet brushed the railing and made a faint flap. Cool salt air touched his cheeks while gull cries echoed above. The bird darted off, snapping a spider-silk thread that held a spinning plastic ornament. The ornament, now unbalanced, turned hard. Its tip clipped a resting seagull on the next rail. The larger bird launched upward. Wind from the take-off twisted the drying line around Joel’s wrist. Wet cloth folded on itself, and the sheet blocked his vision.

Joel steadied his breathing and slid his hand free, but the plastic ornament remained tangled between two cords. A gust pushed the sheet sideways, threatening to send it over the edge. He gripped the lower hem, stepped closer, and lifted the line until the cords loosened. The spinner dropped onto the balcony floor with a dull bounce. At the same moment, the wren returned, landing near crumbs that had fallen from Joel’s pocket. The small hops caught the seagull’s eye, and the bigger bird circled low above the railing. Joel acted first and swept the crumbs into his palm. He folded the sheet over the cleared line and smoothed each corner so the cloth hung straight. Then he hooked the spinner back onto a higher nail. Above the quiet railing, a seagull glided toward the harbor mouth.
