Mira had chosen the quiet afternoon to declutter the living room. Sun warmed the wooden floor, and distant traffic hummed behind the open window. A vanilla candle gave off a light sweetness that mixed with cooler air sliding in from outdoors. She had already stacked old magazines beside the low bookcase, and a tall cardboard box waited on the thick rug for anything that deserved storage.

Her first method was simple: pull the full box straight across the rug. The attempt failed at once; the rug, which has always slid easily on the smooth boards, folded upward and trapped a corner of the box. At that same moment, a lively breeze from the window pushed loose papers across the floor like flat birds. Mira tugged harder, but friction and wind fought against each other, and nothing moved where she wanted. While picking up a sheet that had fluttered under the sofa, she noticed the fan that had been placed near the wall earlier for drying paint. An idea clicked: wind could lift what weight held down. She aimed the fan’s flow beneath the nearest edge of the rug; the fabric billowed just enough to break the grip around the box. One steady shove sent the box gliding toward the doorway. The redirected gust, however, found another target; thin picture books on the bottom shelf of the bookcase toppled forward and slid onto the floor in an untidy wave. Mira left the box in its new spot and turned toward a bright speck dancing on the window glass. A faint rainbow flickered across the pane as a passing cloud moved aside.
