A young gray squirrel landed on the wooden rail of a small house porch just after sunrise. Paper decorations from yesterday’s garden party still hung above the rail; a loose ribbon fluttered against the quiet air and brushed the squirrel’s whiskers. Behind the porch, warm light met the cool scent of damp soil, mixing two moods that drifted around the silent lawn.

The ribbon caught on the squirrel’s claws, and the animal tugged to free itself. The pull slid an entire chain of decorations toward the porch roof. That chain looped around a padlock that held a narrow shed door beside the house. Ribbon tension lifted the lock; the unlocked door shuddered and sprang outward. Inside the shed a metal bottle, stored on a tilted shelf, tipped, rolled down the plank floor, and struck an old lunchbox. The lunchbox skidded toward the porch steps, gathering speed. The squirrel dropped onto the step ahead of the sliding things and pushed a fallen broom sideways. The broom’s bristles spread, slowed the lunchbox, and finally stopped both objects. A burst of dust lifted, then drifted away. The chain of decorations sagged into a new position, no longer pulling on the lock. The squirrel nudged the lunchbox back against the wall, placed the bottle upright beside it, and let the broom rest across both items. Then the squirrel bounded over the step and disappeared into the wet grass.
