A hollow thud rang against the garden fence again. Sam and Uma stopped beside the plum tree and listened for another sound. A bright rubber ball rolled back into sight and bounced once in a joyful arc. It then vanished quickly under the loose board. Last night’s wind had thrown the ball over the fence into their neighbor’s yard. Now it kept slipping through a narrow gap and returning. The children reached for it, yet the fence stood higher than either head. A warped plank rested nearby, thick and heavy enough to form a bridge if they could lift it.

The first awkward try failed within only seconds. Sam pushed the plank upward while Uma steadied the lower end. Gravity pressed the wood down and rough bark scratched their palms. They paused, then swapped places without comment; teamwork showed in their shared rhythm. Together they braced knees, lifted from underneath, and tipped the far edge onto the fence top. The sudden jolt shook an old nostalgic tin birdhouse nailed above. Its tiny painted door suddenly swung open. A black memory card slipped out and slid across the plank. It landed in the soft grass between them. The ball, however, still waited on the other side.

Morning sunlight gently warmed the broad plank today. The scent of crushed leaves drifted upward while bees made a faint buzz nearby. Uma leaned her shoulder against the wood while Sam shuffled forward. The plank creaked yet stayed balanced long enough for Uma to climb. She reached over and nudged the ball back through the gap. It bounced once on their side and rolled to safety. The plank sagged, then both children lowered it onto the grass. Two dusty palm prints, one wide and one narrow, now smudged the board. A smear of green from the rolling ball stretched between the marks. A bee circled slowly above the quiet fence.
