A hollow thud rang from the upside-down tin bucket when Olive tapped its rim. Ian stood beside her on the damp lawn, holding a cup of muddy water. Olive balanced a marble on the bucket’s flat top and nudged it with one finger. The marble slipped over the edge, struck a wooden spoon that leaned against a brick, and the spoon flipped upward. Its handle poked a row of tiny toy blocks. One block slid forward, bumped another, and the last block nudged an onion sprout at the edge of the bed of vegetables. Soft soil crumbled, uncovering pale roots that looked almost silver. Ian laughed, then poured a thin stream from his cup. Water followed the new groove, carrying flecks of soil downward like planets swirling inside a private universe right between their shoes.

Ian crouched and gathered more water from a nearby bucket, still warm from the sun. Warm sunlight pressed against their backs while a faint citrus smell drifted from a nearby hedge. He let the stream fall onto the groove again. The splash seemed to rejuvenate the thin river; water raced faster, picked up grass seeds, and slid beneath the earlier row of toy blocks. The blocks tilted and rolled, bumping into yesterday’s carrot tops in the bed of vegetables. Loose leaves floated away, sticking to Olive’s ankles with a cool, fresh touch. She grabbed a second marble and dropped it from the bucket’s rim. It joined the running water, darted along the track, and struck the spoon once more. This time the spoon spun sideways, scooping water onto an ant hill. Dark sand rose like a miniature fountain, then spread across the grass. A soft breeze arrived and carried the damp scent of soil over the yard. Sprinkler spray followed, wiping their small river into shining beads that slid quietly into the ground.
