"The wax ring is sliding!" Reed whispered.

A bead of warm wax slipped onto his thumb. Late twilight spilled softly through the narrow cellar window. Thin light bounced off a brass thermometer fastened to the overhead pipe. The pipe carried warm water from the kitchen upstairs. Its steady heat softened the wax seals on the fruit jars lining the shelf. If the wax liquefied, syrup would splash onto the earth floor. Reed angled a lantern toward the nearest jar, but three stacked crates blocked the narrow aisle. Silence filled the cellar except for slow drips tapping the barrel tops. Faint sweetness from stored apples mixed with the dusty chill. A single white feather, once caught in Reed’s cap, lay near a damp patch beneath the pipe. Its edge already curled upward from the rising warmth.

Wax bulged lower; the thermometer stripe darkened another small square. Reed pivoted on one foot, measuring two possible routes. He could thread between the shelf and the stone wall, a cool but twisting lane full of cobwebs. Or he could crouch beneath the hot pipe, reach the jars quickly, and risk scalding splashes. He tucked his sleeves tight, then ducked under the pipe. Steam burst from a pin-hole leak; drops peppered his shoulders and stained his shirt. He pried the front jar free and wedged it inside an empty crate waiting in the cooler corner. As he lifted the second jar, a sudden reflection winked from behind the barrel. A small metal box, half hidden by dust, balanced on a bent hook above the soil. Surprise paused his hands, yet the thermometer climbed again. He coaxed the last jar away just before another wax bead peeled loose and plopped on the ground.

Water inside the pipe cooled after the upstairs tap stopped. The drips slowed to an uneven patter, then finally ceased. Steam hovered near the ceiling, then thinned against the dark beams.

蠟肚更垂，溫度計的刻紋又變黑了一格。里德單腳轉身，衡量兩條路。第一條是在架子與石牆間穿行，涼爽卻彎曲，佈滿蜘蛛網；第二條是從熱水管下鑽過，動作快但可能被燙到。他把衣袖塞緊，俯身鑽入管下。針孔狀的漏點噴出蒸氣，水珠濺在他肩上，染濕襯衫。他撬開最前面的罐子，並把它塞進較涼角落的空箱。正抬起第二個罐子時，桶後忽然閃過一道反光。一個半埋在灰塵中的小金屬盒子架在彎鉤上停於土面之上。短暫的意外讓他手勢停滯，但溫度計仍持續上升。他在又一滴蠟剝落、啪地落地前，把最後一個罐子拉離危險區。

樓上水龍頭關閉後，水管裡的水開始降溫。滴水聲漸成零亂的拍點，最後完全止息。蒸氣在天花板附近漂浮，然後在黑樑間慢慢變淡。
