"Copper glows here," Mabel whispered.

Steam rose as she brushed a thumb across the sun-warmed chain near the pier bollard. A tin cup of soft wax rested on the plank beside her boots, its rim shining with a thin heat shimmer. Above her, a network of ropes crossed between masts and rails, each strand carrying beads of condensation that dropped now and then. She dipped a small spoon into the cup and let one drop fall on a bright link. During the brief transition from liquid to solid, the wax spread, but the metal was still too hot, and the new bead slid away into the water.

An optimistic guess told her the cup would stay warm for only a few more minutes, so she tried again. This time she chose a shaded patch where the chain draped against a damp post. The cooler surface slowed the drip, allowing the wax to stiffen into a neat circle. Encouraged, she moved along the line, varying the angle of each pour. One bead landed close to a rust spot and took on a darker tone; another met a colder patch and formed tiny cracks as it cooled too quickly. The gentle afternoon warmth offered a sustainable pace, neither rushing her nor chilling the cup.

She added a final drop just above the waterline, watching it harden while gulls cried overhead. Small beads dotted the link now. Water below kept tapping the wood.

她樂觀地估算杯中的蠟還能保持溫熱幾分鐘，於是再試一次。這回她選了鍊條倚著潮濕柱子的陰影處，較低溫的表面使蠟珠慢慢凝結成整齊圓點。受到啟發，她沿著鍊條繼續滴落，每次改變傾斜角度。一滴靠近鏽斑的蠟因熱度較高呈現深色；另一滴落在更冷的位置，快速冷卻後出現細裂紋。午後柔和的熱度維持著可持續的節奏，既不催促她，也不讓杯子變冷。

她在水面線上方再添最後一滴，凝視其硬化，同時聽見海鷗在上方鳴叫。小蠟點如今散布在那個鍊環上。下方的海水持續拍擊木板。
