English 原文
Four arm-lengths from the north wall, a wide table stood under a narrow skylight. Wren set a thin board on the workbench beside wood shavings. She placed a stencil flat across its grain. She hoped to finish tracing before the bright rectangle of daylight slipped away. Its sharp edge already reached the first pencil mark. Cool workshop air slid over her arms while the faint scent of pine clung to the shavings. Small breakfast crumbs still dotted the far corner of the bench. A lone metal fork caught the beam, throwing a star of glare over the design. The reflection washed out the lines, so she pivoted the fork behind a glue pot. The glare only bounced onto the waiting metal ruler. The shadow edged farther, trimming the rectangle to half its length.
A clamp stuck to the bench blocked her from swinging the board into a clearer patch. She quickly counted two possible routes across the beam. She could thread a mirror onto a bracket and direct the light again—steady but slow. Or she could angle the heavy table itself for speed. The bright edge shortened once more, now brushing the stencil’s last swirl. Wren wedged her shoulder against the table leg and cranked it around the pegs. The motion tore a strip of cloth from her sleeve. It scattered a small, dusty object onto the floor. She leaned to pick it up from the plank. The folded paper unfurled, showing faded sketches of berries and numbers. Mixing notes lined the margins of the old recipe under the bench. She tucked the half-drawn board aside and studied the fragile sheet instead. Light bent through a glue bottle, tinting the paper green.
