Sunlight Shows a Hidden Knot in the Oak Lid -

English 原文
A dry rasp ran along a block of oak as Dorian pulled fine sandpaper over it. The steady rhythm settled into his arm, the same routine he had followed each morning while shaping lids for small boxes.
Specks of powder slipped through his fingers like quicksand, gathering in pale piles on the bench. Cool light entered the high window, caught the floating dust, and spread a tender silver veil across tools and timber. The smell of fresh wood mixed with faint glue, lingering between chisel racks. Behind him, a broad parent plank leaned against the wall, waiting for later cuts. "Keep the stroke even," he reminded himself, tapping the board’s edge.
Halfway through the pass, sunlight bounced off a leaning mirror pane and struck the oak surface. The sudden glare masked the grain, leaving only his own blurred shadow. He shifted left, yet the beam followed, sliding across the freshly sanded face. When he tilted the lid upward, the bright patch slipped away, and a dark swirl emerged. The swirl curved over itself twice, the shape carpenters called a grief knot when it appears inside lumber. Its twisted figure cut across a lighter streak that older workers nicknamed a regret line, both flaws buried until the light exposed them. Dorian sighed, lifted a soft cloth, and rubbed once more. The reflection still scattered across the lid, and the knot and line stayed visible. A faint smear of dust clung to his sleeve. He set the unfinished piece beside the mirror; glare rested on the wood, and the knot still marked the surface.
