The cool marble counter pressed against Sara's palms. She steadied a genuine wooden board while grapes rolled nearby. Theo lifted a pot onto the stove, planning grape jam from yesterday's vineyard visit. Steam fogged the glass lid, then cleared, revealing dark juice swirling with tiny reflections. Light refracted through the curved sugar jar. It painted an amazing stripe across the tiles. Both friends kept chopping and stirring, unaware of the moving band of color. Warm, sweet air drifted over the cool tiles, carrying a faint smell of simmering fruit.

Near noon, the stripe slid higher and bounced off a hanging ladle. The polished metal threw a fierce glare straight into Theo's eyes. He jerked left; his shoulder cast a wide shadow over Sara's cutting board. Carrot rounds lost their outline, and several pieces slid off the edge. The shadow also covered the timer, so its red numbers vanished into darkness. Sara bent sideways to view the screen, and her head blocked the ceiling lamp above the pot. For a moment, the ladle's shining bowl became the destination of every wandering beam. The sudden dimness made the syrup look thicker than its real strength. She added more water. Extra liquid spattered, and droplets caught the bouncing light, scattering tiny mirrors across the stainless surface. Grape juice kept boiling, purple bubbles rising like small silhouettes against the silver wall. Sticky purple drops dotted the board where both knives had met edge to edge. Sunlight kept sliding across the silver blades, making new sparks every second.
