The Bean That Escaped the Counterweight-

English 原文
A spoon rattled against a ceramic bowl, echoing through the warm kitchen. Lily balanced on a narrow wooden stool because she wanted to lift a tall glass jar of sugar back onto the highest shelf. The jar’s clarity showed the bright crystals inside, yet its weight pressed downward. Each time she leaned forward, one leg of the stool wobbled on a tile that had warped during a hurricane last autumn. She tried hugging the jar close, but the tilt grew sharper, and she stepped down fast before everything could topple. One wrong move carried potential damage to every cup painted with a tiny village under that shelf.
Lily rubbed her palms, then watched the stool sway for a moment. A heavy cast-iron pan rested on the counter beside her. An idea flickered: the pan’s mass could oppose the shaky leg. She nudged the pan onto the lower step, letting its weight act as a counterweight. The stool straightened, though the handle now poked outward like a lever. She climbed again and tucked the sugar jar safely between two mixing bowls. Just then the handle slid, and dried beans stored inside the pan spilled across the tiles in a soft rush. Warm steam from a nearby pot drifted over the scattered beans, carrying a faint earthy smell. Lily swept the beans into a bowl. A single bean rolled under the cupboard and stayed there by the skirting board.
