Oscar slid a row of freshly washed plates across the wooden counter and stacked them near the sink. Warm vapor from a simmering tomato soup curled upward, fogging the lower half of the glass window. A distant gull cried beyond the open pane, its call faint but clear above the steady bubble of the pot. Beside the sink waited two painted ceramic shakers, one shaped like a cheerful sea captain, the other like a wide-eyed explorer; he had found them in a street-market bargain last spring. Their ocean-blue coats still shone, though the white glaze at their hats showed tiny cracks. Oscar reached for them, planning to return the playful pair to the narrow spice shelf above the stove.

He lifted each shaker with one hand while the other guided a ladle through the soup. As Oscar placed the captain upright, the gentle tremor tipped the explorer forward. The small figure rolled, clicked against a glass jar, and nudged the jar toward the edge. Oscar twisted his wrist, sliding the ladle aside, then shifted his elbow so his sleeve touched the jar before gravity gathered speed. The jar slowed, but the explorer kept spinning. Oscar set the captain beside it, hull-like shoulders blocking its path, then turned both figures ninety degrees so their flat backs faced the room. They formed a quiet barrier, and the row of spice jars stayed still. He returned the ladle to the pot and scooped one final swirl of soup.
