"The pot keeps wobbling on this burner again." The metal handle rattled under Blake's oven mitt. Steam climbed from the saucepan in abundant swirls and kissed the cold windowpane. A thin crust already formed across the cocoa. The half-open window leaked a shallow breath of frost toward the stove. Blake measured a precise quantity of milk, yet drops cooled on the spoon before they reached the surface. He slid the saucepan toward the center ring for safety, away from the dripping kettle. Condensation gathered on the tiles, shining like beads. A rolling shimmer circled the rim, making the liquid look like melted glass. Warmth pressed against his chest; crisp air brushed the back of his neck.

Yet the two sharp temperatures inside the kitchen argued harder. The glowing coil below warmed the chocolate until its edges bubbled. Meanwhile, the icy draft outside cooled the top and forced flakes to scatter across the glossy surface. Blake twisted his wrist and whisked faster, but the spoon stiffened when syrup clung and cooled. He repositioned the pot on a back burner, then nudged the window almost closed. Moist heat blurred the hanging ladles, while a faint chill pricked Blake's fingertips. Several glass lids were fogged by rising vapor. He has kept that timer beside the stove since last winter.

During the shuffle, his ceramic penguin timer sat too close to the edge. It slid along the damp sill and plunged into the bowl of frozen peas. A sharp hiss rose as the chilly glaze cracked against the warm plastic beak. Blake fished the timer out, dried it, and returned to the saucepan. The draft eased, yet stubborn clumps still floated. Chocolate streaks marked the spoon and the stove edge. Steam hung above the saucepan, and thick bubbles kept rising.
